# **NSW $15,000 Zero-Interest Solar & Battery Loan: Home Energy Saver Explained for 2026**

For many NSW homeowners, the biggest obstacle to installing solar and battery storage isn't whether they want to reduce their electricity bills — it's finding the money to pay for the system upfront.

That has changed significantly in 2026.

The NSW Government's **Home Energy Saver** program now offers eligible households a **zero-interest loan of up to $15,000** for approved home energy upgrades, including rooftop solar and residential batteries.

Applications for the loan are currently open, and the NSW Government currently lists **no closing date**.

So, who qualifies? What can you actually buy with the loan? And can it be combined with the other solar and battery incentives currently available?

Here's what NSW homeowners need to know.

---

## **What Is the NSW Home Energy Saver Program?**

Home Energy Saver is a NSW Government program designed to make energy-saving home improvements more affordable.

Rather than requiring an eligible household to pay the entire cost of an upgrade upfront, the program provides access to a **zero-interest loan of up to $15,000**.

The loan can be repaid over **up to 10 years**. It is funded by the NSW Government and delivered through participating finance providers **Brighte and Plenti**.

This is important to distinguish from a rebate.

You're still borrowing and repaying the money — but **there is no interest charged on the eligible loan**, subject to the program's terms and approval requirements.

For a household considering a sizeable solar and battery system, this can significantly reduce the upfront cash required to get started.

---

## **Who Is Eligible for the $15,000 Zero-Interest Loan?**

The program is targeted at NSW homeowners and landlords.

According to the current NSW Government eligibility requirements, applicants must:

- own the property;
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident; and
- have a **combined annual taxable household income of up to $210,000**.

There are additional eligibility and product requirements, so meeting the income threshold alone doesn't automatically guarantee approval.

This relatively high household-income threshold means the program isn't limited only to very low-income households.

For example, the NSW Government itself gives an example of a household earning **$200,000** purchasing a **$10,000 solar and battery system** and applying for the zero-interest loan to repay the upgrade over ten years.

---

## **What Can the Loan Be Used For?**

This is where Home Energy Saver gets particularly interesting.

The zero-interest loan isn't limited to solar panels.

Eligible upgrades currently include:

- **Rooftop solar systems**
- **Residential batteries**
- **Switchboard upgrades**
- **Heat-pump and solar hot-water systems**
- **Reverse-cycle air conditioning**
- **Induction cooktops**
- **Level 2 EV chargers**
- **Ceiling insulation**
- **DC ceiling fans**
- **Draught proofing**
- **Double glazing**

and other approved energy-saving improvements.

For homeowners looking at solar and batteries, that creates the opportunity to think about the house as a complete energy system rather than simply adding more panels.![6-2](https://www.adorenergy.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/6-2.png?width=1080&height=1350&name=6-2.png)

---

# **Can You Use the $15,000 Loan for Solar AND a Battery?**

**Yes, subject to eligibility and the program's product requirements.**

Both rooftop solar and residential batteries are eligible technologies under Home Energy Saver.

This could make the program particularly useful for a homeowner who wants to install a larger solar system together with battery storage but doesn't want to fund the entire purchase upfront.

A well-designed system can generate solar electricity during the day, supply the home's immediate consumption and store surplus generation in the battery for use later.

That means instead of exporting all your excess daytime solar and then purchasing electricity from the grid at night, a battery allows you to use more of the electricity your own home generated.

---

# **What If You Already Have Solar?**

You don't necessarily need to start from scratch.

If you already have rooftop solar, a battery may allow you to store more of the electricity you're currently exporting during the day and use it later when your solar production falls.

The right battery size, however, depends heavily on your individual home.

Before simply choosing the biggest battery available, we recommend looking at factors such as:

- your existing solar-system size;
- daytime versus evening consumption;
- electricity bills;
- solar export;
- available roof space if you're considering additional panels;
- whether the property is single-phase or three-phase;
- switchboard configuration;
- battery installation location; and
- whether backup power is important to you.

The goal shouldn't be to install the largest possible system.

It should be to design a system that makes sense for **how your household actually uses electricity**.

---

# **What About the Federal Home Battery Discount?**

This is another important part of the 2026 residential battery landscape.

The Australian Government's **Cheaper Home Batteries Program** provides an upfront discount on eligible home batteries installed with solar.

Current NSW Government guidance describes the federal program as providing an upfront battery discount of **around 30%** for eligible batteries between **5 kWh and 100 kWh**, with the exact value calculated for the individual installation.

That is separate from the NSW Home Energy Saver zero-interest loan.

In practical terms, eligible homeowners may have access to different forms of assistance that address different parts of the purchase: an **upfront federal battery discount** can reduce the eligible battery cost, while the **NSW zero-interest loan** can help finance eligible home-energy upgrades.

Your eligibility and the exact treatment of incentives should always be confirmed before proceeding.

---

# **What About the NSW Battery Rebate?**

This is an area where there is still considerable confusion online.

NSW's previous household **battery installation discount is no longer available for new installations**.

The NSW Government states that household battery installations completed before **1 July 2025** could qualify under the previous NSW scheme. New eligible residential battery installations can instead access the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

NSW does, however, continue to offer an incentive for eligible batteries connected to a **Virtual Power Plant (VPP)**.

So when comparing quotes in 2026, be careful when someone simply advertises a vague “NSW battery rebate.” Ask exactly **which government program they are referring to**.

---

# **What Is the NSW Virtual Power Plant Incentive?**

A Virtual Power Plant, or VPP, connects participating batteries so stored electricity can be made available to the grid at certain times.

NSW currently offers an **upfront incentive for connecting an eligible battery to a participating VPP**, in addition to whatever ongoing payments may be available under the VPP provider's agreement.

From 1 July 2026, batteries **over 2 kWh and up to 50 kWh** can be eligible for the NSW VPP incentive, although the incentive calculation is based on capacity made available to the grid up to 28 kWh.

The actual amount isn't a single fixed dollar figure. It can vary depending on factors including the VPP provider and the agreement you enter into.

A VPP also isn't automatically the right choice for every homeowner. You should understand how much of your battery the provider can access, when they can access it, what you're paid and any other conditions before signing up.

---

# **Can You Combine the Different Programs?**

Potentially, yes — but don't think of them all as identical “rebates.”

For an eligible NSW homeowner in 2026, there may be several different mechanisms available:

**Australian Government:** an upfront discount toward an eligible home battery through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

**NSW Government:** a zero-interest Home Energy Saver loan of up to $15,000 for eligible energy upgrades.

**NSW Government:** a separate incentive for connecting an eligible battery to a participating Virtual Power Plant.

The NSW Government specifically confirms that batteries installed under the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program may also qualify for the NSW VPP incentive, provided the VPP requirements are met.

Because eligibility differs between programs, your installer and finance provider should establish what applies to your particular installation rather than simply adding several advertised “rebates” together.

---

# **Is There Also a $4,000 NSW Home Energy Saver Discount?**

Yes — but there's an important distinction.

Home Energy Saver also includes a **discount of up to $4,000** aimed at eligible lower-income households.

At the time of writing in September 2026, **applications for this discount have not yet opened**.

The NSW Government says it will be available to eligible homeowners and renters with a combined annual household income of up to **$80,000**, or people holding certain eligible concession cards.

This is different from the $15,000 zero-interest loan, which is **already open for applications**.

If you're potentially eligible for both, timing matters. Current NSW Government guidance recommends applying for the discount first if you want the discount and loan applied to the same purchase.

# **Is a Solar + Battery System Worth It in 2026?**

There isn't one answer for every household.

Two homes on the same street can have completely different results depending on electricity consumption, roof orientation, solar generation, battery size, tariffs and when electricity is being used.

That's why we don't recommend choosing a solar and battery package based purely on the biggest advertised battery capacity.

A proper assessment should consider your:

**Electricity bill → energy consumption → roof → existing solar → battery requirements → installation location → switchboard → backup requirements → available incentives and finance.**

For some households, adding a battery to an existing solar system may be the logical next step.

For others, increasing solar capacity while installing a battery may produce a better overall system.

And for homes without solar, designing the solar and battery together from the beginning can allow both components to be sized around the household's actual energy requirements.
